What's On My Desk? 28/1

Regular readers are probably getting a bit bored of seeing the gradual progress of my current sewing project...but, never fear, I am nearing the end! These felt number ones are wee token gifts for my nephew's first birthday party and I'm more than a little pleased with how them. Turns out being able to blanket stitch makes me feel extremely proud of myself. It's the little things in life...right?

What are you making at the moment?

Crochet Love Heart Card

Having heard the wonderful news that one of my uni friends has just got engaged, I quickly made this card up. It's one of my favourite handmade card designs, and now, with Valentine's Day on the horizon, you can make one too!

You will need:

  • Four small crocheted hearts. I made these from embroidery thread, a 3mm crochet hook and this fail-safe pattern. If you are not a crocheter you can buy crochet heart appliques from here.
  • A blank card and envelope
  • A red pen
  • Alphabet stampers
  • Double-sided sticky-tape

Method

Stick on the hearts using the double-sided sticky-tape in a upside-down arch shape. Draw lines between the hearts to look like bunting. Use the alphabet stampers to create your personalised message.

What have you been making this weekend?

This weekend is the first weekend that Handmade Monday has been hosted Vicky at Lucy Blossom Crafts. Please do pop over to show your support and see what else has been made this week.

Weekend Inspiration: A Spot of Tartan

It's Robert Burns Night coming up on Sunday so let yourself be inspired by this gorgeous tartan bunting by myRetrotextiles...

...and look at these gorgeous tartan pendants from Joanna's shop. Joanna is also one of my favourite bloggers so do go and visit her at Adventures and Tea Parties.

Finally, take a look at this cushion. I'm loving tartan at the moment.

What's inspired you this weekend?

What's On My Desk? 21/1

It's been a bit of a squeeze to find crafty time over the last few days. Lots and lots of post-school meetings (some productive; some not so productive), have really been cutting into my evening crafty time. Is it bad that in one rather arduous meeting today, I started thinking about my crochet granny blanket? Just think how many more rows I'd be crocheting if it were socially acceptable to crochet away during meetings.

On Sunday, I had a blissful hour continuing my "number one" project. You'll see some progress has been made, although I'm not quite ready for the final "ta-dah" moment. A couple more hours one evening and a couple of cups of tea should sort it out. Any more guesses about what I'm making!?

Does anybody else fit in time for crafting at work?

Pink Spotty Dress

No finished projects from this week. I'm still working away at my mystery felt project and my granny stripe blanket. I'm now really enjoying my blanket. That may or may not be anything to do with the fact there are just 15 rows to go. The end of the granny stripe is nigh.

So, instead of a recent project, this week I'm showing you handmade dress number three that I finished last summer. It's the last one I made with my own made up pattern. You can see the problem, can't you? It gapes round my arms and it's way too tight round the waist. Look at the fabric pulling in the picture below. And that's with me breathing in.

Since I made this dress I've started using actual proper patterns and my dresses are fitting much better, but I still love the compliments I get when I wear something so bright and cheerful to work. It's a bit of a dilemma really. I like lots about the dress but I know, if I were to remake it, it would be so so much better and so so much more comfortable.

Fabric - pink spotty polycotton - eBay; slippers - Accessorize; cardigan - charity shop find

So what would you do? Have you ever re-made one of your creations once your technique improved?

Weekend Inspiration: Fruit and Veg

Isn't the stuff you can find on Etsy just so amazingly creative? This allotment bracelet by 'By the Shed' made from polymer clay beads is just no exception.

And I loved these apple appliques by 'MyfanwysAppliques'.

I used to love Hama beads when I was younger but I'd never have though of making jewellery from it. How amazing is this watermelon necklace from 'KimsGeekeryGrotto'?

And finally, if your looking for a slightly quirky crochet project look no further than this free carrot pattern from one of my favourite blogs The Perfect Hiding Place.

...and the reason for this week's theme? This month I'm desperately trying to eat a few more fruit and vegetables everyday to try and keep myself feeling on tip-top form. An apple a day keeps the doctor away and all that.

Which is your favourite 'healthy', crafty item?

What's On My Desk? 14/1

Today I'm almost halfway through an insanely busy week of parents' evenings and general chaos. In truth I've hardly touched any crafting over the last couple of days but here's what my dining room table looked like on Sunday during a blissful couple of hours of listening to music and playing with felt.

What's on your desk this week?

Granny Stripe Blanket: Another Update

I'm now seven weeks into my granny blanket adventure and I have to say I sort of hit a wall. Admittedly I didn't touch it for a good couple of weeks over the holidays and since I restarted back I'm finding the repetitiveness dull rather than comforting.

On Saturday I seriously contemplated ripping it all down and using the wool to start off a ripple with a bigger hook to make it grow quicker like I did with my last blanket. I thought I'd have a go at one more stripe and time myself. It took me the length of an Eastenders episode to do one stripe. So that's how I'm tackling it now, a bit of TV and a stripe. I'm going to try and finish my last row as we find out who has murdered Lucy Beale during their 30th Anniversary episode in February.

Have you ever lost enthusiasm for a big project halfway through?

Weekend Inspiration: Felt Decorations

I love the pastel colours and creativity of these and there's a PDF pattern available for iMannuFatti's shop...

...and look at the pretty stitching on these...

...and on this guy by ynelcas...

...and what a lovely idea from luula for a child's birthday.

After really enjoying making felt Christmas puddings in December, I discovered a bit of a love for felt. It's cheap, doesn't fray and you can even use glue instead of stitching...what is not to like? I've ordered a rainbow of coloured felt from Ebay and I can't wait to take my fabric scissors to it and get creative this weekend.

What weekend crafting is happening with you?
