Crochet Tips: How To Rib

Over the coming weeks I plan to share some of the crochet tips and techniques I've picked up over the last year or so.

I shyed away from ribbing for a while as I got put off when I tried it with knitting, but honestly crochet ribbing is such a simple but effective technique.

It's also amazingly useful when you want to crochet something a little stretch and texture such as a cuff or trim for a hat.

Abbreviations (UK)

dc - double crochet
ch - chain
st - stitch
hk - hook
fo - fasten off

How to Rib

1. Make your slip knot, then make your foundation chain.

2. Dc into 2nd ch from hk, then dc in each ch across.

3. Turn, then ch1.

4. Dc into back of 2nd st from hk, then dc in back of each st across.

5.  Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the rectangle is the desired length.

6. Fo, then darn in ends as usual.

As this is my first tutorial, I'd love some feedback as to how clear these instructions are.  I hope it helps someone out there!

  4. Yay! Welcome! This is probably not the best post for just starting out but there's lots of stuff on YouTube. I also recommend this Hobby Craft leaflet - this is how I learnt! http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/supplyimages/WF1002/How-To-Crochet.pdf
